Genesis 2:7b. What is a Soul?

Genesis 2:7b “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

Contrary to mainstream thinking, a soul is not some ethereal entity or spirit that we possess. No. The soul is the complete person, the physical body sculpted from earth by God’s own hand and then filled with the breath of life from the Word of God. You are a living soul. The life in you is not yours: it comes from and depends on God.

Adam and Eve were conditionally immortal souls: as long as they lived in harmony and obedience to the word of God, they would live forever. When they sinned through disobedience, they lost immortality. The Scripture says, “[…] The soul that sinneth, it shall die” (Ezekiel 18:20a). In this world, “[…] all have sinned […] ” (Romans 3:23), therefore all souls are mortal. God “[…] only hath immortality” (1 Timothy 6:16).

Yet God offers to give you back eternal life, if only you will know and trust Him and believe in Him with all your soul: hands, heart and head (John 17:3, 3:16). By faith, eternal life can begin for you today.

The Word of God is bread from heaven. God sent it, but we must gather it, appreciate it, digest it, and live by it. These days it is increasingly scarce. Many are starving for it and don't know it because they keep feasting on bad bread that doesn't satisfy. But if we would learn to carefully gather up the fragments of the True, Heavenly Bread of Life, we would always enjoy a feast of crumbs, because even God's crumbs are miracles mighty to save (Mark 7:24-30).
