Genesis 6:5. Complete Corruption

Genesis 6:5 “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Just like one bad apple eventually rots those around it, sin spread its corruption until the whole world was a putrid, reeking mass of evil. In the generation when God destroyed the world with the flood, wickedness was everywhere He looked: top, bottom, dead center, and underneath. Evil was long, wide, deep, dense and open for business 24-7. Yet I doubt that any of those intelligent, long-lived, talented, good-looking people considered themselves bad. Corruption was so widespread, there were always plenty of apples more rotten than themselves not far away. Yet rather than raise an alarm, rot was reinterpreted as progress. And so the rot-race was born, and perdition became a competition between humanists who had denied their origins and their obligations.

Which brings us to today. What about us? What kind of stream flows in your consciousness? What fountain sources your thoughts? God holds you accountable for what you think, even if you haven’t acted, or put the ideas into practice just yet. Your thoughts are an index of your character, (“as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7), and God reads your soul like an open book, including the thoughts of your heart: the ones that are buried so deep in your subconscious psyche that you can hardly find them, let alone the words to express them. Some of those thoughts are evil seeds planted by the Enemy of souls when you put yourself on his enchanted ground and watched that dubious movie, or dabbled in spiritualism and the occult. There is a hypnotic science of mind manipulation in the entertaining arts, in marketing, in politics, and in many false religions, that subtly shapes your identity and your beliefs. There is a battle going on for your attention, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. The battle is for your soul and your destiny: eternal life, or annihilation forever.  Your stream of consciousness right now may still be a mixture, but it is trending toward cleaner or dirtier, whether you realize it or not. The decisions you make today are taking you either toward God who is light and life, or toward selfishness, the black-hole of death.

The Word of God is bread from heaven. God sent it, but we must gather it, appreciate it, digest it, and live by it. These days it is increasingly scarce. Many are starving for it and don't know it because they keep feasting on bad bread that doesn't satisfy. But if we would learn to carefully gather up the fragments of the True, Heavenly Bread of Life, we would always enjoy a feast of crumbs, because even God's crumbs are miracles mighty to save (Mark 7:24-30).
