Genesis 6:4 “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown”
When the descendants of Seth began to intermarry with the daughters of Cain, the mixture of the two lineages revived the gene pool, which made for tangible advances in technology and science and a sort of renaissance in the arts in the new generation. The wave of super-intelligent and eminent intellects along with their new inventions and discoveries created the illusion of human improvement. Instead of giving God the glory for their abilities, people took the credit for themselves. Automatically, faith took a real hit, for as Jesus points out “How can ye believe which receive honor one of another, and seek not the honor that cometh from God only?” (John 5:44).
Nevertheless, even while pure faith and morality took a sharp turn downward, the mixture with the godly race meant that the new generation retained certain religious forms and traditions, which made for a deceptive facade of spirituality: a self-righteous, self-satisfied crust that was very hard to crack, well-nigh impervious in fact, to all reproof and correction. The antediluvians cast aside all scruples and the “restrictions” of religion and without the right frame of reference for correct bearings or direction, they plunged toward a higher state of existence. Or so they thought.
As then, so today. Wherever the Spirit of God withdraws, there the tumor of human ego grows to extreme proportions. It presses against the spiritual optic nerve, resulting in blindness of soul. The rapid, aggressive growth of pride and selfishness is an unnatural cancer that deadens all sensibilities and deceives us into believing that things are getting better when they are actually getting worse.
