Genesis 5:2. Created, Blessed and Called

Genesis 5:2 “Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.”

I find this fascinating. So is Adam a he, or a they? Is Adam one, or two, or two in one? The answer is “all of the above!” God’s name for the first man and the first couple was Adam.  Why not? Adam+Adam = Ad a madam! :)  So Adam the first name was also the last, or family name: the Adam family, of which the modern version has received an “s” tacked on the end, perhaps to remind us that there’s more than one person in the family!

This verse highlights another aspect of man’s likeness to his Creator who is Father, Son and Spirit. Just as man’s oneness with his soulmate extends beyond the physical unity of bone and flesh to a social and spiritual unity in name and character, so the three personages of the godhead are indivisible in nature, name and character.

This verse also verifies that both Adam and Eve were created, blessed and named on the same day, the sixth day of creation. The name Adam first appears in the creation narrative without explanation of its origen when God brings the animals “unto Adam to see what he would call them” (Gen 2:19). Now we get clarification: while Adam named the animals, he didn’t get to name himself. God not only formed the man from the dust of the ground, and the woman from the rib-bone, He gave them the same calling!

You also have been created, blessed and called by name. God’s calling is more than a way to identify you. It is both a claim on your life and a promise to make you one with Himself. You are His, He has blessed you, and He has plans for you.
