Genesis 3:20. The Mother of All Living

Genesis 3:20 “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living”

The first name Adam gave to his partner emphasized how she was made and where she came from. Up to now she had been called Woman "because she was taken out of man" (2:23). Her new name calls attention to her purpose and destiny as a beacon of hope against the immediate backdrop of the death sentence. As the first mother on earth, Eve is of course the mother of all living people except for Adam and herself. More than that however, the meaning of her new name captures the hope for life, not only in the temporary sense of the perpetuation of the race through childbirth, but also in the eternal sense by virtue of the Seed of the woman, Jesus Christ. Only because of Him, Eve could become the mother, not of the dead and the dying, but of the living. By faith in Christ, you can be among those living too.
