Genesis 3:9. Earth's First Investigative Judgment

Genesis 3:9 “And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where are you?”

Don’t think for a second that God asked this question to gather information! The Word of God is clear that nothing is hid from God and He knows all things (Psalms 139:7-12, 1 John 3:20). So why does He ask? God’s questioning teaches us something beautiful about His character and His dealings with the erring. Can't you hear the yearning and heartache in God's question? It's as if He is expressing how much He already misses His wayward children. It's as if to say, "why didn't you come running to greet me like you usually do?"

At the same time, this is the first investigative judgment recorded in Scripture. Before passing sentence and administering punishment, God comes as Chief Examiner. His question invites introspection and gives an opportunity for the guilty couple to confess they are wrong and humble themselves before Him. God is also vindicated before the watching universe, as He reveals His character of mercy and justice working in tandem within His immutable law. The inexcusable nature of sin is laid bare before the scrutiny of God’s searching questions.

Today God comes asking you, too: "where are you?" Where are you, relative to Your Creator? Where have your choices brought you? Take a good look around you and take stock of your spiritual condition and your current relationship status with the Source of Life.
