Genesis 3:7. You Dress Like Who You Believe

Genesis 3:7 “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.”

This is the first camouflaged clothing on record. No, actually, the second…this is incredible when you think about it! Satan camouflaged himself first by masquerading as a serpent to deceive Eve, and as soon as she believed him and persuaded Adam to join her, they became like their deceiver in character and action, and that was made manifest even in their choice of covering! Don’t ever try to convince yourself that the clothes you wear say nothing about your character or the condition of your soul!

Adam and Eve made camouflaged clothing to hide themselves. In essence, it was an attempt to cover their guilt and shame, to justify self and excuse the inexcusable. All such efforts are always woefully inadequate. Fig leaves: now that was a poor choice of material! Obviously Adam and Eve were naive as to effect their sin would have on that foliage! No wonder Jesus later cursed the fruitless fig tree and exposed the futility and danger of covering our defunct spirituality with a pretense of vitality (Matthew 21:19). Our best attempts to justify self, to cover our bare butts just can’t last. They shrivel and dry in a very short time, leaving us in need of a new suit real fast, which means it won’t be long until we’ve stripped all the leaves and revealed the fruitlessness of our fig trees. To use in-vogue language, sin is simply unsustainable.
