Genesis 2:21a. The Rest of You Comes Through God-given Rest

Genesis 2:21a “And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept”

When you work side by side with someone, you get to know each other better than you would in any other way. God invites us to work with Him for that very reason. Not until we know God through working together with Him will we trust Him enough to fully enter into His rest, and sleep deep and peaceful in His arms.

The same way God worked at Creation, He works in recreation! He completed Adam in His own image through a process that included Adam’s participation. God gave Adam a job, and when he did it, he saw his own lack; a lack which it was impossible for himself to supply. But when he had done all that God had asked, he rested soundly in God-given rest, and without his knowing how, God finished the work! (see Gen 2:20-24). The Sabbath was the celebration of the fact that God is the Great Finisher. He finished His own image in humanity, and He will refinish it in us if we, by faith, work in His work and rest in His rest. Ultimately God alone finishes the work, but He wants us to finish our god-given part so that we may also revel with Him in the satisfaction and celebration of the final product!

The Word of God is bread from heaven. God sent it, but we must gather it, appreciate it, digest it, and live by it. These days it is increasingly scarce. Many are starving for it and don't know it because they keep feasting on bad bread that doesn't satisfy. But if we would learn to carefully gather up the fragments of the True, Heavenly Bread of Life, we would always enjoy a feast of crumbs, because even God's crumbs are miracles mighty to save (Mark 7:24-30).
