Genesis 2:9 “And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”
Both the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil were beautiful to look at, and both yielded edible, delectable fruit. The forbidden tree had no undesirable physical characteristic, or even just some tangible trait to set it apart from all the rest, which made it more of a test. Judging by one’s own senses, independent from the Word of God, there was no reason to believe that the forbidden tree was any different than any of the others.
So today, our feelings are poor moral guides. “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12). From the very beginning, God’s design is that you believe His Word, depend on it, and trust it above all else, including your own judgments, intuitions, impressions, feelings, and even what you can see, smell, hear, taste and handle.
