Genesis 2:11-12 “The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.”
The name Pison means “dispersive,” which means to distribute over a large area. This first of four headwaters issuing from the Edenic River of Life, the Pison wrapped all the way around Havilah, which means “circular,” a land of gold, bdellium and onyx stone. Bdellium is “a fragrant resin produced by a number of trees related to myrrh, used in perfumes,” and Onyx stones are a type of agate known for their diversely colored layers. (New Oxford American Dictionary). So Havilah was a sweet-smelling land studded with gemstones and precious metal. The name Havilah, however, as you may have noticed, calls attention not to the land with its gold, gems and perfume, but to the river that defined its borders and made the land what it was. Always remember that everything good, fragrant and beautiful, everything precious and colorful owes its existence to the ever-flowing, ever-giving, ever-distributing waters of life “proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb” (Revelation 22:1). “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17a).
