Genesis 2:2-3a God Rested to Bless

Genesis 2:2-3 “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”

In case you missed it in the last verse, this text says it again: God ended his work. That means He completed and finalized it, and then He rested. Why did God rest? We know He wasn't physically tired (see Isaiah 40:28). Was He just stopping to savor the moment, to admire the finished product and rejoice in the work of His hands? Or was there a deeper reason? God never does anything selfishly. He is always thinking of others. When God rested, He did so with your benefit in mind. Notice the cause of God’s blessing on the Sabbath: “And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” God rested on the seventh day in order to bless it, and that blessing is for you and me.
