Genesis 1:24-25 “And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast on the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good."
First God says “Let the earth bring forth the living creature,” and then the text says “God made the beast of the earth.” Like me, you may be tempted to ask, “So did the earth bring forth the creatures, or did God? But that is the wrong question, because it sets you up to believe in the exclusion of one of the two options that the text explicitly includes. What to some minds appears to be a contradiction, in fact highlights a profound truth repeated elsewhere in Scripture: God is a collaborator. Everything He makes has a specific place and function that serves a definite, unselfish purpose with the continuation of His work. Could God have made the animals without involving the earth? Of course, but that is not the way He choses to work. To you and me, earth that we are, as well as to the rest of His creation, He says “Let…” If you will obey that simple Word by responding, “Yes Lord, I am willing,” with your actions as well as your words, you will discover that in God’s every command is the power to make it a reality.
